Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat preferred, Greek yogurt works)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (Hellmann’s or Duke’s recommended)
  • 1 packet (1 oz) ranch seasoning mix (Hidden Valley or store brand)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional)
  • 1/4 cup fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 large head broccoli, cut into small florets (about 3 cups)
  • 1 large head cauliflower, cut into small florets (about 3 cups)
  • 1 English cucumber, sliced into rounds
  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes (halved if large)
  • 1 bell pepper (any color), sliced into strips
  • 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into sticks
  • 1 cup snap peas or snow peas
  • 1/2 cup black olives (for spider decoration)
  • 1/4 cup prepared ranch dip (set aside for piping)
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (to thin dip for piping)

Instructions

  1. Make the ranch dip: In a small bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, and 1 packet ranch seasoning mix. Stir until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice if using, and mix again. Set aside.
  2. Thin a portion of the dip for piping: Spoon about 1/4 cup of the prepared ranch dip into a separate small bowl. Add 1-2 tablespoons milk, one tablespoon at a time, stirring until the dip reaches a drizzly consistency. Transfer to a squeeze bottle or a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off.
  3. Prep the vegetables: Wash and dry all produce. Cut broccoli and cauliflower into small florets. Slice cucumber into rounds about 1/4 inch thick. Cut bell pepper into strips about 2 inches long. Peel carrots and cut into sticks. Halve cherry tomatoes if large. Leave snap peas whole.
  4. Arrange the vegetables on a large platter or cutting board, grouping by color for visual appeal. Place the small bowl of ranch dip in the center.
  5. Draw the spider web: Using the squeeze bottle or ziplock bag, pipe a spiral of thinned ranch dip onto the surface of the dip in the bowl. Start in the center and work outward. Then, using a toothpick or knife tip, drag lines from the center outward to the edge of the bowl to create the web pattern.
  6. Add the spider: Place two black olives on the web to create a spider. Use one whole olive for the body and slice the other lengthwise into thin strips for legs. Arrange legs around the body, pressing gently into the dip.
  7. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Best served within an hour of assembly.

Notes

For best results, chill the thinned dip for 10-15 minutes before piping to help the web hold its shape. Cut vegetables uniformly for a professional look. The dip can be made up to 3 days in advance; vegetables can be prepped up to 24 hours ahead. For a dairy-free version, use vegan sour cream and mayonnaise. For a lighter option, swap half the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
