Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water
  • 3 cups cooked white or brown rice
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds, toasted (optional)
  • Steamed or stir-fried veggies like broccoli or snap peas (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook 3 cups of rice according to package instructions (about 15-20 minutes).
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and cornstarch-water slurry. Set aside.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook 5-7 minutes until no longer pink, breaking it apart and draining excess fat if needed.
  4. Lower heat to medium. Stir in minced garlic and optional red pepper flakes. Cook 1-2 minutes until fragrant, careful not to burn garlic.
  5. Pour honey garlic sauce over beef. Stir continuously for 2-3 minutes until sauce thickens and coats the beef in a glossy glaze.
  6. Spoon warm rice into bowls. Top with honey garlic beef. Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds. Serve immediately with steamed or stir-fried veggies on the side.

Notes

Add garlic after beef is mostly cooked to avoid bitterness. Toast sesame seeds for extra aroma. Adjust sauce thickness with water or cornstarch slurry as needed. Use tamari instead of soy sauce for gluten-free option. Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted with adjusted cooking times.
