This Easy Cranberry Orange Sauce with Fresh Ginger is a quick and simple recipe that brings together bright citrus, warm ginger, and tart cranberries for a perfectly balanced sauce. Ready in under 20 minutes, it’s a crowd-pleaser that elevates any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries (or frozen, no need to thaw)
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice (from about 1 large orange)
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1½ tablespoons fresh ginger, grated (about a 2-inch piece)
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients (5 minutes): Rinse the cranberries and pick out any soft or shriveled ones. Zest your orange before juicing it. Grate your ginger with a microplane. Measure out your sugar and water.
  2. Combine everything in the pot (1 minute): Add the cranberries, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, grated ginger, water, and salt to a medium saucepan. Give it a quick stir.
  3. Bring to a boil (3-4 minutes): Set the heat to medium-high and let the mixture come to a boil. You’ll hear the cranberries start to pop.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer (10-12 minutes): Once boiling, turn the heat down to medium-low so the sauce is at a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally. The sauce is done when it coats the back of a spoon and leaves a clear trail when you run your finger through it.
  5. Check the consistency (1 minute): The sauce will thicken more as it cools, so don’t overcook it. It should still be a little runny when you take it off the heat.
  6. Cool and serve (30 minutes minimum): Remove the pot from the heat and let the sauce cool for about 30 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl or storage container. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

Don’t skip the salt—it makes the flavors pop. Grate the ginger, don’t chop it, to avoid fibrous bits. Watch the heat to prevent the sauce from turning into jelly. Taste halfway through and adjust sweetness or ginger as needed. The sauce gets better after a day in the fridge.
