A tender, nutty pumpkin bread made with browned butter and topped with a sweet maple glaze. This recipe is easy to make, perfect for gifting, and delivers rich autumn flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 15 ounces (about 1 ¾ cups) pumpkin puree
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 12 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently until foam settles, golden brown specks appear, and a nutty aroma develops (5-7 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together granulated sugar and brown sugar. Add cooled brown butter, pumpkin puree, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and pumpkin pie spice.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Stir gently with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan. Pour batter into the pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 50-60 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil after 30 minutes.
  7. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While bread cools, whisk powdered sugar, maple syrup, and 1 tablespoon milk. Add more milk if needed for drizzle consistency.
  9. Drizzle glaze over completely cooled bread and let set for 5 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Ensure eggs are at room temperature to prevent curdling. Do not overmix the batter to ensure a tender crumb. Let the bread cool completely before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting. For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
