These spider web deviled eggs are a fun, budget-friendly Halloween snack that kids love. With a creamy filling, a chocolate or gel spider web, and an olive spider on top, they’re easy to make and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise (Hellmann’s or Duke’s recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (or Dijon for milder flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (plus more for boiling water)
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground preferred)
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips OR black decorating gel (for spider webs)
  • 12 pitted black olives (large, for spiders)
  • Small amount of cream cheese or mayonnaise (to stick spider legs)
  • Optional: pinch of smoked paprika or chives for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil the eggs: Place 12 eggs in a large pot in a single layer. Cover with cold water by about 1 inch. Add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat, then cover, turn off heat, and let sit for exactly 12 minutes.
  2. Ice bath: While eggs cook, fill a medium bowl with ice and cold water. Transfer eggs to ice bath using a slotted spoon. Let sit for at least 10 minutes to stop cooking and make peeling easier.
  3. Peel eggs: Gently tap each egg on the counter to crack shell all over. Start peeling from the wider end. Run under cold water while peeling to remove stubborn bits.
  4. Slice and scoop: Slice each egg in half lengthwise. Gently pop out yolks into a medium bowl. Arrange egg white halves on a serving platter, cut side up.
  5. Make filling: Add mayonnaise, yellow mustard, white vinegar, salt, pepper, and paprika to the yolks. Mash with a fork until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  6. Fill eggs: Spoon yolk mixture into a piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip off corner (about 1/4 inch wide) and pipe filling into each egg white half, creating a nice mound.
  7. Make spiders: Slice each olive in half lengthwise. One half is the spider body. Slice the other half into thin strips (6-8 per half) for legs. Arrange 8 legs on top of a deviled egg, then place olive body on top. Use a tiny dab of cream cheese or mayo to stick legs if needed.
  8. Draw spider webs: If using chocolate chips, melt in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second bursts, stirring until smooth. Dip a toothpick into melted chocolate and draw a spiral on the yolk filling from center outward. Then drag a clean toothpick from center to edge in straight lines to create web effect. If using black decorating gel, squeeze directly onto yolk in same pattern.
  9. Finish and serve: Place one olive spider on each egg in the center of the web. Sprinkle with smoked paprika for a ‘dirt’ effect if desired. Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 4 hours.

Notes

For easier peeling, use eggs that are at least a week old. The chocolate web works best when eggs are at room temperature; if too cold, chocolate may crack. For kids, black decorating gel is easier to use than melted chocolate. Filling can be made a day ahead and stored in a piping bag in the fridge. Assemble and decorate the day of serving for best results.
