This easy slow cooker apple cider is infused with orange and whole cloves for a warm, aromatic drink that’s perfect for holiday gatherings. It’s simple to make, naturally crowd-pleasing, and can be served with or without a splash of bourbon.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups (64 ounces) apple cider
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves (about 15-20)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Extra orange slices for garnish (optional)
  • Fresh cranberries for garnish (optional)
  • Star anise (optional)
  • Bourbon, dark rum, or brandy for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice the orange into 1/4-inch thick rounds (about 6-8 slices). Leave the peel on.
  2. Stud each orange slice with whole cloves, spacing them about 1/2 inch apart (3-4 cloves per slice).
  3. Place the clove-studded orange slices at the bottom of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Add the cinnamon sticks.
  4. Pour the apple cider over the top. Add the maple syrup and vanilla extract. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Cook on low for 4 to 6 hours. After 4 hours, the cider will be deeply infused. Do not let it boil.
  6. For a polished presentation, remove the orange slices and cinnamon sticks with a slotted spoon before serving. For a rustic look, leave them in.
  7. Serve warm in mugs. Garnish with fresh orange slices or cranberries if desired. Set out bourbon, rum, or brandy for guests to add if they wish.

Notes

Do not boil the cider; keep it on low for a gentle simmer. Stud cloves securely into orange peel to avoid loose cloves. Taste before serving and adjust sweetness or spices as needed. For a longer party, switch to warm setting after 4 hours. Leftover cider keeps in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
