Crispy Mummy Hot Dogs for Halloween

Crispy Mummy Hot Dogs - featured image

A nostalgic and spooky Halloween snack featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky pastry dough, fried until golden, and decorated with seeds for eyes. Quick, easy, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 standard beef or turkey hot dogs
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts or puff pastry sheets
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for eyes)
  • Vegetable oil or canola oil (for frying)
  • Ketchup and mustard (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Take pie dough or puff pastry out of the refrigerator and let it sit for 5 minutes to soften slightly. Roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Cut the dough into strips approximately 1 inch wide and long enough to wrap around a hot dog.
  3. Pat the hot dogs dry with a paper towel to ensure crispiness.
  4. Place a hot dog at one end of a dough strip. Sprinkle a little shredded cheese over the hot dog.
  5. Roll the hot dog up in the dough, leaving the ends exposed to resemble mummy hands and feet. Tuck the ends in slightly and overlap the dough like bandages. Repeat for all hot dogs.
  6. Pour about 1/2 inch of oil into a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat to approximately 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully place the wrapped hot dogs in the oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until the dough is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the hot dogs from the oil and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil and cool slightly.
  9. While still warm, press sesame seeds or poppy seeds into the exposed ends of the hot dogs to create eyes.
  10. Serve warm with ketchup, mustard, or ranch dressing.

Notes

Pat hot dogs dry before wrapping to prevent steaming and ensure crispiness. Fry in batches to maintain oil temperature. If using gluten-free dough, handle gently as it can be more brittle. For a lighter option, bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying. Reheat leftovers in an air fryer or toaster oven to restore crispiness; avoid microwaving.
