Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix (e.g., Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup pecan halves, roughly chopped
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, whole milk, maple syrup, eggs, vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and salt until smooth and fully combined (about 30 seconds).
  3. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly to the edges. Tap the dish gently on the counter to release air bubbles.
  4. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the pumpkin layer, covering the entire surface. Break up any clumps with your fingers. Do not stir.
  5. Drizzle the 1/2 cup melted butter as evenly as possible over the dry cake mix. Do not stir.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the chopped pecans, brown sugar, 2 tablespoons melted butter, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Stir until the pecans are coated and the mixture looks like wet sand. Sprinkle evenly over the cake mix layer.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly. The center should be set but still slightly jiggly.
  8. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the pumpkin layer to firm up and the flavors to meld.

Notes

For best results, use 100% pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling). Real maple syrup is essential for the best flavor. Let the dump cake rest for at least 15 minutes after baking to allow the pumpkin layer to set. To refresh leftover crumble, sprinkle extra toasted pecans on top before reheating.
