These creamy, buttery crockpot mashed potatoes free up stovetop space and stay warm for hours, making them the perfect side dish for holiday gatherings or any crowd. Made with Yukon Gold potatoes, cream cheese, and butter, they’re unbelievably velvety and forgiving.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened and cut into chunks
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth, low-sodium
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the potatoes (10 minutes): Peel all 5 pounds of potatoes, then cut them into 1-inch chunks. Rinse the potato chunks in cold water to remove excess starch, then drain well.
  2. Layer in the crockpot (5 minutes): Place the potato chunks in a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the cubed butter, softened cream cheese, minced garlic (if using), salt, and pepper. Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over everything. Don’t stir yet.
  3. Cook on low (4-5 hours) or high (2.5-3 hours): Cover the crockpot and cook until a fork slides into the potatoes with almost no resistance. About halfway through cooking, give everything a gentle stir to redistribute the butter and cream cheese.
  4. Warm the milk (2 minutes): About 10 minutes before the potatoes are done, warm the milk in a small saucepan or in the microwave until warm to the touch.
  5. Mash the potatoes (5 minutes): Once the potatoes are tender, turn off the crockpot. Use a potato masher to roughly break up the potatoes, or switch to a hand mixer on low speed. Gradually add the warm milk, mixing until you reach your desired consistency. Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Keep warm until serving: Switch the crockpot to the ‘warm’ setting. The potatoes will stay perfectly hot and creamy for up to 2 hours. If they start to thicken too much, stir in a splash of warm milk or broth to loosen them up.

Notes

For best results, warm your dairy before adding to prevent gluey potatoes. Don’t over-mash; stop as soon as lumps are gone. Potatoes can be made a day ahead and reheated in the crockpot on low with a splash of warm milk. For a dairy-free version, use vegan butter, dairy-free cream cheese, and unsweetened oat milk.
