15-Minute Asparagus with Brown Butter and Lemon - featured image

A simple, flavorful side dish featuring tender-crisp asparagus sautéed in nutty brown butter and brightened with fresh lemon juice. Ready in just 15 minutes, it’s perfect for busy weeknights or impressing guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 medium lemon)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the asparagus under cold water. Snap or cut off the woody ends (about 1–2 inches). Pat dry with a kitchen towel.
  2. Place the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Melt slowly, stirring frequently until the butter foams and turns golden-brown with a nutty aroma (about 3–4 minutes). Be careful not to burn it.
  3. If using, add the minced garlic to the brown butter and stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the trimmed asparagus to the pan. Use tongs to coat each stalk in the brown butter. Cook for 6–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until tender but still crisp and slightly caramelized on the tips.
  5. Season with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir to combine.
  6. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the asparagus and toss quickly to mix.
  7. Transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Watch the butter carefully while browning to avoid burning. Use medium heat and do not overcrowd the pan to ensure even cooking. For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with olive oil or coconut oil. Add Parmesan cheese for a cheesy finish if desired. Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 2 days; reheat gently to avoid wilting.
